CHAPTER 24

END OF COFFEE BREAK

Roscoe peeks over a rock as the aliens take away the group. He looks at the gun and back. “Yeah, that is not happening.”

He sees the three aliens coming toward him and looks around.

The three soldiers come to the site. They look at the gear and camp stove. One sniffs the cup of coffee and starts to taste it.

“You’re not going to drink that?” one says, looking shocked.

“It smells good. The Earthling was going to drink it,” the other alien says. “I have heard these Earthling are excellent cooks.”

“I’ve heard that too,” the last one says.

“Let gather their stuff together and take it back to the ship,” the first one says.

“Don’t we need the climber?” asked the one holding the coffee cup.

“You’re right.” The leader kneels down and tugs on the rope. “This is how they are getting down. You stand guard. We will be right back and do a sweep.”

“You better check in,” one of them says. “Captain seems to want this one.”

“Why? Is he dangerous?” He asks, but then taps his bracer. “Sir, the climber has probably gone back down the mountain.”

“Do a quick sweep of the area to be sure,” Captain says. There is a brief silence. “Wait. Did you look over the edge?”

“No sir,” he says. “Hold on.”

The three of them look over the edge but only see darkness and snow. The leader taps his bracer. “There is no one over the ledge.

“Bring in the gear. If there is a rope, cut it. Then we will sweep the area.”

The leader pulls out a knife and cuts the rope. The alien, still holding the coffee cup, quickly drinks it. “This is very good.”

“I told you not to drink that,” the leader snaps. He grabs the cup and almost tosses it over the edge. He looks at the pot, pours himself a cup, and sips it. He smiles and nods. “This would be excellent in the morning. You stay here.”

The alien watches them walk off and quickly pours another cup of coffee.

Roscoe is hanging by his hands under the overhang. He watches his rope fall by. After a few moments, he climbs back up and toward the top. He stops at the sight of the alien. He looks back down, groans, and then quickly climbs up. The alien has his back to him. Roscoe pulls the gun, looks at it, and then sneaks up behind the soldier. “Hey.”

The alien whirls around. Roscoe hits him the gut with the gun. The alien bends over. He uses the gun to hit him on the back of the neck. He drops at Roscoe’s feet. “Okay, now what. Can’t climb down.”

He studies the soldier on the ground. “You’re kind of short.”
